The Intermittent Behind The Scenes, Taeyeon ‘Four Seasons’
1. The meaning of each set
a. The long journey with a person has ended. The narrator is just standing blankly with an emotionless face on a desolate sand hill. That image exactly resembles a parched dried-up old tree. The sand hill represents the present state of the narrator who is preparing to go on a different journey leaving their abandoned love behind. It’s the present state of the narrator, who is seasonless, whose nights and days are vague. The narrator is likely to disappear beyond that low ridge of the sand hill at any moment.
b. The narrator's figure sitting with an expressionless face on the platform in a space densely packed with plaster statues. The bright sun shines on her plaster-like hardened heart. Somewhere the flowers are falling, and her hardened heart gradually begins to melt. At last, it seems like spring.
c. On the ceiling, an old fan grunts around, and a blush spreads on her cheeks, as she is in love. As if all the emotions after falling in love were unfamiliar, she takes a gulp of the ice water as she swallows the big and small tensions. The narrator is sitting calmly on the mattresses that are piled up, as if they were to fall down at any moment. Whether or not she knows the end is coming, her summer is passing like this.
d. The image of the naive narrator is nowhere to be seen, and she recites the lyrics to the song like the main character of a classical movie. Like an actor who spits out their lines in a movie. The lovers hanging behind her look at each other and long for love, but it's just a black and white print out that isn't alive. The weariness is exactly like autumn.
e. A shabby, broken table that seems like it’s been abandoned for a long time. There are many objects scattered here and there that represent time. However, it’s full of broken things that don’t move. The narrator's time seems to have stopped a long time ago. Time (moments) with him (her significant other) flow through the insensitively sparkling chandelier. That’s how her last season of winter ends.
2. Beads and headlights
On the sand dune set, I worried for a long time over what to put in the bag the narrator was carrying. I was thinking of the image of the furniture in the broken bag pouring out with a clatter when it pops open as the song starts, but I couldn’t quite resolve what to put in it. Props like hair dryers and hair rollers that are a close-up on life? Ah, that wouldn’t look good. At this time, the art director gave me the idea of transparent beads with an icon for each of the seasons. Ah if these were made well, they will be goods (merchandise)? Hehe. That’s how the idea of the beads in the bag was born. And one more, the rolling car headlights in the autumn set. That was also the idea of the art director.
3. The meaning of the slime liquid
A sticky transparent liquid that flows through the leaves and the chandelier. The object is a visual expression of things that fade, disappear and are distorted as time passes. I wanted to express the other person’s changed heart, misunderstandings, and weariness (in my own way) lyrically. I really like things that are grotesque but lyrical. One day, I want to do a piece of work that is only dotted with such things. No, I have to do it.
4. The intent of the work
It's not easy to make people imagine hidden stories in a music video. It's easy to give off the nuance with a collage (a compilation of images), but it's a technical failture if the story is too obvious. The main goal of this project was to capture the various aspects of the most beautiful present time of the artist’s life, while placing emphasis on expressing the images of four seasons as unidimensional as possible. The seasons are important and the lyrics are important, but the most important thing is the artist themselves. I tried to hide the story in the back, but I don’t know if it’s hidden well.
5. A guidebook for the thousands of correct answers
What is spring and what is summer, I get excited as a director when I face different opinions and various interpretations here and there. I am writing this post for the many juniors who have a will to direct, but I assure you that the sentiments and feelings you recall while watching the music video are 100 percent correct. So let’s not criticize the feelings of others as wrong answers. They are all different correct answers.
(I’m thankful for someone watching me completely till the end) By the time the video came out, dozens of staff including myself filmed short week-long and month-long dramas. This piece of work is the sort of thing that happened to me. A drama that was intense and difficult, but one where I learnt a lot. Is the genre Noir Action? (I want to express thanks and respect once again to the staff who readily participated in my drama) I hope everyone is in the middle of each of their favorite season, yours truly.

a. 한 사람과의 기나긴 여정이 끝났다. 황량한 모래 언덕 위에 홀로 서 있는 화자는 감정 없는 얼굴로 우두커니 서 있을 뿐이다. 그 모습이 바싹 말라버린 고목을 꼭 닮아 있다. 모래 언덕은 저물어버린 사랑을 등 뒤로 하고 다른 여정을 떠날 채비를 하는 화자의 현재 상태를 나타낸다. 어느 계절도 품지 않은, 낮과 밤이 모호한 화자의 현재 상태. 화자는 금방이라도 모래 언덕의 저 낮은 능선 너머로 사라질 것만 같다.

b. 석고상이 빼곡히 들어차 있는 공간, 단상 위에 표정 없는 얼굴로 앉아 있는 화자의 모습. 석고처럼 굳어 있는 그녀의 마음에 쨍한 햇빛이 드리운다. 어디선가 꽃비가 내리고, 굳어있던 그녀의 마음도 서서히 녹기 시작한다. 비로소 봄인 듯하다.

c. 천장에 붙은 낡은 팬이 툴툴거리며 돌아가고, 사랑에 푹 빠진 그녀의 뺨 위엔 홍조가 옅게 번져 있다. 사랑에 빠진 후의 모든 감정이 낯선 듯, 크고 작은 긴장들을 얼음물 한 모금에 꿀꺽 삼켜본다. 금방이라도 무너져내릴듯 켜켜이 쌓여있는 매트리스 위에 태연하게 앉아 있는 화자. 다가올 결말을 아는지 모르는지, 그녀의 여름이 그렇게 지나고 있다.

d. 천진했던 화자의 모습은 온데간데 없고, 고전영화의 주인공처럼 분한 그녀가 노랫말을 읊조린다. 마치 영화 속 대사를 내뱉는 배우처럼. 그녀의 뒤에 걸린 연인은 서로를 바라보며 사랑을 갈구하지만 생동하지 않는 흑백 프린트일뿐이다. 권태는 꼭 가을을 닮아있다.

e. 오랫동안 버려진 듯 구석구석 낡고 부서진 어느 식탁. 시간을 나타내는 오브제들이 여기저기 널려있다. 하지만 모두 움직이지 않는 고장난 것 투성이. 화자의 시간은 오래전에 멈춘 듯 하다. 눈치없이 반짝이는 샹들리에 사이로 그와의 시간들이 흘러내린다. 그녀의 마지막 계절 겨울도 그렇게 끝이나버리고 만다.

2. 구슬과 헤드라이트

모래언덕 세트에서 화자가 들고 있는 가방 안에 무얼 넣을까 긴긴 시간 고민을 했다. 노래가 본격적으로 시작되는 타이밍에 고장난 가방이 툭 하고 열리며 그 안에 있는 집기들이 와르르 쏟아지는 이미지를 생각했는데 정작 그 안에 뭘 집어넣느냐가 도무지 풀리지 않았다. 헤어드라이기나 구루프같은 생활밀착형 소품? 아, 너무 어울리지 않잖아. 이때 미술감독님께서 각 계절별 아이콘이 들어가있는 투명 구슬이 어떻겠냐 아이디어를 주셨다. 아 이거 잘 만들면 굿즈 되겠는데? ㅎㅎ 가방 속 구슬은 그렇게 탄생했다. 또 하나, 가을 세트의 일렁이는 자동차 헤드라이트. 그것도 미술감독님의 아이디어.

3. 액체괴물의 의미
-
나뭇잎과 샹들리에 사이로 흘러내리는 점성있는 투명 액체. 시간이 지나면서 퇴색되고 사라지고 왜곡되는 것들을 시각적으로 표현한 오브제다. 상대의 변한 마음이라던가, 오해라던가, 권태등을 (내 나름대로는) 서정적으로 나타내고 싶었다. 그로테스크한데 서정적인거 그런거 무지 좋아한다. 언젠간 그런것들로만 점철되어있는 작품 하고싶다. 아니 해야지.

4. 작의

콜라주 뮤비 (이미지들을 엮은 뮤비) 로 늬앙스를 풍기기는 쉽지만 숨겨진 이야기를 상상하게 하기란 쉽지 않다. 이야기가 도드라지면 그건 기법적으로 실패한거니까. 이번 프로젝트는 사계절 이미지를 최대한 일차원적이지 않게 표현하는 것에 중점을 두면서도 아티스트의 인생에서 가장 아름다울 현 시점의 다양한 모습을 담는것이 최우선 목표였다. 계절도 중요하고 가사도 중요하지만 제일 중요한건 아티스트 그 자체니까. 이야기는 뒤에 숨긴다고 숨겼는데 잘 숨겨진건지 모르겠다.

5. 정답 수만개의 해설서

뭐가 봄이고 뭐가 여름이냐, 분분한 의견과 다양한 해석을 여기저기서 마주할 때 감독으로써 신명이 난다. 연출에 뜻이 있는 수많은 후배들을 위해 나는 지금 이 글을 쓰지만 뮤직비디오를 보고 들은 당신이 떠올린 감상과 그 마음이 백퍼센트 정답이라 단언한다. 그러니 타인의 감상을 오답이라 비난 말자. 모두 다 다른 정답이다. (나로썬 누군가 끝까지 봐주는것 자체로 감사한 일이다) 한 편의 영상물이 나오기까지 나 포함 수십명의 스태프들이 짧게는 몇주, 길게는 몇달짜리 드라마를 찍는다. 이번 작업도 나에겐 그러했다. 치열하고 고달팠지만 많이 배웠던 드라마. 장르는 느와르 액션이랄까. (저의 드라마에 기꺼이 동참해주신 스태프분들께 다시 한번 감사와 존경을 표합니다) 그럼 모두 각자가 가장 좋아하는 그 계절 한 가운데에 있길 바라며, 이만 총총.
